A memner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and legal practitioner Clement Opoku Gyamfi has slammed the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing it as a “setup” orchestrated under questionable circumstances.
Mr Gyamfi, a former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie South and also one of the lawyers for Wontumi, made the comments on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following Chairman Wontumi’s sudden arrest by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Wontumi was apprehended shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra, where he had voluntarily reported for questioning as part of an ongoing probe into his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, including encroachment into protected forest reserves.

“This is very worrying and sad,” Gyamfi lamented. “They attempted to arrest him last Friday and failed. The police invited him for interrogation, which he honoured, only for EOCO to arrest him afterwards.”
The lawyer, widely known by his nickname Kwame Opoku CID, suggested the move was deliberately staged to humiliate the party stalwart. “I sense this is a setup—especially considering the decision to ask him to report again after bail. If they truly believed he was a flight risk, they would have seized his passport.”
Gyamfi questioned the legality and ethical basis of re-arresting someone who had already complied with an official invitation. “This is highly unusual. The law doesn’t work like this,” he asserted, adding that while no one is above the law, justice must be applied fairly.
He cautioned that law enforcement agencies must work collaboratively and with transparency to avoid the perception of political targeting or abuse of power. “Institutions of state must uphold due process and mutual respect. That’s the only way to preserve public confidence in justice,” he said.
