WhatsApp has launched a new feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages into text, making it easier to read messages when listening isn’t convenient.
The feature, known as voice message transcripts, must be manually enabled and is available on supported devices.
The new feature converts voice messages into written text, but only the recipient of the message can view the transcript. The sender does not have access to the transcription. Importantly, all transcriptions are processed on the user’s device, ensuring that voice messages remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.

Voice message transcripts will be displayed according to the recipient’s privacy settings for read receipts. This means that if read receipts are turned off, the sender will not know if the recipient has read the transcript.
How to Enable Voice Message Transcripts
By default, voice message transcripts are turned off, but users can enable them by following these steps:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Toggle voice message transcripts on or off.
- Tap Choose language, then select the primary language in which you receive most of your voice messages.
- Confirm the selection by tapping Change to {language}.
Users can modify the transcription language at any time by going to Settings > Chats > Transcript language. However, disabling the feature will reset language preferences.
To use the voice transcription feature, users must have iOS 16 or newer installed, and Siri must be enabled on the device. If Siri wasn’t activated before enabling transcription, the necessary language pack must be downloaded to proceed.
Currently, WhatsApp supports transcription in several languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic. Additional languages such as Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, and Thai are supported on iOS 17 and above.
How to Transcribe a Voice Message
Once voice message transcripts are enabled, users can view transcriptions by:
- Pressing and holding a voice message.
- Tapping Transcribe.
- Expanding the transcript by selecting Open Menu in the voice message.
WhatsApp has noted that transcripts might take a moment to generate, and in some cases, users may see a “Transcript unavailable” error. This could be due to:
- A mismatch between the selected transcript language and the voice message language.
- Background noise affecting voice recognition.
- The message is in an unsupported language.
WhatsApp also cautions that transcriptions may not always be fully accurate, particularly if the speech contains unclear words or strong accents.
With this new feature, WhatsApp aims to improve accessibility and user convenience by allowing users to read voice messages instead of playing them aloud. This feature is particularly useful in noisy environments or when discretion is needed.
Users can start using voice message transcripts today by updating their WhatsApp app and enabling the feature in settings.
