We’re Focused On Alleged Drug Trafficking Scandal, Not Adwoa Safo – Justin Kodua

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shifted its focus from internal disciplinary matters to what it describes as a “national emergency” following recent allegations of drug trafficking that have sparked widespread public outrage and international concern.

Speaking in a phone interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive show with host Don Kwabena Prah on Monday, April 7, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, announced the postponement of a scheduled meeting concerning the former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo.

Kodua made it clear that the issue of Adwoa Safo’s appearance before the party’s Disciplinary Committee has been suspended indefinitely in light of what he described as “a matter of national interest”.

“There is not going to be any discussion on whether or not Honourable Adwoa Safo is going to appear before any committee or not,” he stated emphatically. “What the party is going to discuss is the running issue with respect to the alleged drug trafficking in our country.”

According to Mr. Kodua, the seriousness of the drug trafficking allegations calls for “critical engagement” with the government, rather than diverting energy toward intra-party politics.

“Our priority now is the alleged drug trafficking scandal, not internal party politics,” he said. “Ghanaians deserve answers from the government. We expect transparency, accountability, and clarity on this matter.”

In a strong critique of the government’s handling of the scandal, Kodua expressed disappointment over what he described as inconsistencies and the absence of clear communication from official channels.

“The rank and file of our party have expressed disappointment at the worrying behaviour of this government,” he said. “There are several mind-boggling questions we expect the government to answer. The attempt to sweep these critical issues under the carpet is unacceptable.”

Mr. Kodua further questioned the lack of updates from Ghana’s security agencies despite the international attention the issue has received.

“It is shocking that, when this issue has become an international topic, we are yet to hear any official communication from our security agencies,” he lamented. “This is worrying and embarrassing for our country.”

His remarks come amid increasing pressure from civil society groups, opposition leaders, and the general public for the government to come clean on the issue and restore public confidence.

While the party was addressing the national scandal, former MP Adwoa Safo showed up at the NPP headquarters with her supporters, expecting to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Committee. Her visit, however, was met with no official communication about the postponement.

She expressed frustration over the committee’s failure to formally notify her, saying she was prepared to respond to any questions or concerns from party leadership.

The disciplinary proceedings against Safo were reportedly related to her prolonged absence from Parliament during the 8th Parliament, a matter that had drawn criticism from both constituents and party officials.

Mr. Kodua concluded by reiterating the NPP’s position that national interest must take precedence over party politics during a time of crisis.

“We must put Ghana first. The time to seek answers and demand action is now,” he eemphasised

The party has not disclosed when the postponed disciplinary hearing will be rescheduled, but MMrKodua hinted that the matter will be revisited once the drug scandal has been adequately addressed and resolved.

For now, the NPP leadership says it is pprioritisingtransparency, national security, and restoring the country’s image in the face of growing international scrutiny.
