The Paramount Chief of Wenchi Traditional Area, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing illegal mining activities at Atuna, a community within his jurisdiction.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Paramount Chief and signed by Reindorf Oware, Tabrako III made it clear that no individual or company has received permission to engage in mining within the area.
“Effective immediately, by order of Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, all companies involved in illicit mining operations at Atuna are ordered to vacate the premises without delay,” the statement declared. It directed that all mining activities must cease immediately, with machinery and equipment to be removed from the site by 6:00 p.m. on January 5, 2025.
The statement further emphasised the urgent need to mitigate the environmental risks associated with illegal mining. “All excavated pits must be filled and covered completely to prevent accidents, and any damaged land should be restored to its original condition,” it stated, warning that failure to comply with these instructions would result in serious consequences.
The Paramount Chief’s office reiterated that the protection of the land is paramount, urging everyone within the Wenchi Traditional Area to respect the land and adhere to the laws.
“The Omanhene calls on all residents to work together in this crucial matter to preserve the integrity of the environment,” the statement stressed.
In response to the growing concerns, Nana Akoratua Adutwum Kyeremeh Siasaa Kuffour IV, the Toafohene of Wenchi, is rallying the support of locals to stage a demonstration on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The protest will aim to express the community’s dissatisfaction with the ongoing illegal mining activities and the environmental degradation it has caused.
