The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is optimistic about retaining the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025, despite a fierce challenge from the opposition.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Akwatia Watch programme on Thursday, August 28, Kwame Owiredu, spokesperson for the NPP campaign team in the constituency, said the party remains united and determined to secure victory while also honouring the memory of the late MP, Ernest Kumi, whose passing triggered the by-election.
“It is vibrating for the NPP. The NPP is poised to retain the Akwatia seat. Even though we are mourning our late MP, Hon. Ernest Kumi, we are still poised and determined to keep the seat, and the grounds bear witness to this assertion,” Owiredu said.

He added that both party supporters and community members have expressed strong confidence in the NPP’s chances.
“Almost everybody is saying we are retaining the seat in Akwatia, and it is very important because this particular vote is a vote to vindicate and honour the name of Ernest Yaw Kumi,” he stressed.
The Akwatia by-election is widely viewed as a crucial test of the NPP’s political strength in the Eastern Region, particularly at a time when the party is working to consolidate its parliamentary numbers. Retaining the seat would provide the ruling party a symbolic boost as it navigates ongoing national political battles.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed the NPP’s claims of dominance in the constituency. Speaking on the same programme, Nathaniel Tetteh, Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the NDC, described the NPP’s campaign as “gasping for breath.”
He argued that the ruling party has no new message for the people of Akwatia beyond repeated invocations of the late MP’s name.
“The NPP has no concrete plan or positive message for the people. They are simply relying on the legacy of Ernest Kumi, but that will not win them this election,” Tetteh said.
The by-election has generated significant national attention, with both major parties pouring resources into the constituency. For the NPP, victory would serve as a continuation of Kumi’s legacy and a morale booster ahead of future contests.
For the NDC, however, an upset win in Akwatia would signal a shift in voter sentiment in one of the region’s most competitive constituencies.
