President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed what he describes as a major diplomatic breakthrough following the adoption of Ghana’s reparations motion by the United Nations General Assembly.
The resolution, presented on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, calls for renewed global commitment to reparative justice for African countries and descendants of enslaved people. It urges member states to engage in structured dialogue and take concrete steps to address the long-term social, economic and cultural effects of slavery.
After extensive deliberations, the motion secured 123 votes in favour, with the United States, Argentina and Israel voting against it, while 52 countries abstained. The United States described the resolution as “highly problematic”, acknowledging the historical injustice of slavery but raising concerns about the intended beneficiaries of reparations.

In a post on X on Thursday, March 26, President Mahama said he was “overjoyed” by the outcome, which recognises the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
“I am overjoyed by the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity,” he stated.
He attributed the achievement to strong international cooperation, citing the contributions of the African Union, CARICOM and other partners in advancing the initiative from proposal to adoption.
President Mahama said the resolution represents a meaningful step in honouring the millions of Africans affected by the transatlantic slave trade. Drawing on the words of Toussaint Louverture, he highlighted the importance of unity in addressing historical injustice.
“The greatest weapon against oppression is unity,” he referenced.
He further urged continued global solidarity in pursuing justice and restoring dignity to those impacted by slavery.
“We must stand united in seeking the restoration of the humanity and dignity of our forebears who were enslaved and sold,” he added.
