“We Got Quite a Few Things Wrong” – Bawumia Apologises to NPP Supporters for 2024 Election Loss

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a public apology to party supporters over the NPP’s dismal performance in the last general elections.

Speaking during an address to party faithful in London, United Kingdom, Dr Bawumia acknowledged that strategic errors and missteps contributed to the party’s electoral losses, both at the presidential and parliamentary levels.

“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.

Despite the setback, Dr Bawumia expressed hope for the future and called on party members to rally behind a renewed vision.

“I believe that, by the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward.”

The 2024 general elections dealt a historic blow to the NPP, which lost both the presidency and its parliamentary majority. John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the presidential race with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), defeating Dr Bawumia, who polled 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

In Parliament, the NDC secured a commanding 183 seats, leaving the NPP with just 88 — its lowest representation since the return to multiparty democracy.

In the aftermath of the defeat, the NPP commissioned a 12-member fact-finding committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye to investigate the causes of the electoral loss. The committee has since submitted its report, but party leadership has opted to keep its contents confidential, describing it as an internal working document.
