We don’t want Ebi Bright as mayor – Tema Youth to Mahama

A group of youth from Tema on Saturday staged a heated protest at the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, demanding that President John Dramani Mahama appoint a native of the area as the next mayor.

The demonstration, marked by the burning of car tyres, drumming, and chanting, was aimed at registering the group’s strong opposition to reports suggesting Ebi Bright is being considered for the mayoral role.

According to the protesters, Patience Ankamah Addo had been widely tipped for the job after going through the necessary vetting processes, and any attempt to sideline her for an outsider would amount to a disregard for the wishes of the people of Tema.

Spokesperson for the youth, Dora Sappor, expressed their frustration in an address to the media. “We are here with a heavy heart to register our displeasure. We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen,” she stated.

“She was not even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her to be the mayor? This is something we will not understand.”

Sappor further noted that the call for a local to occupy the position was not only a youth-led demand but also had the backing of traditional authorities in Tema East.

“This is a collective voice from the youth and traditional leaders. We want an indigene to be appointed, and that is non-negotiable,” she added.
