WAEC Cancels Entire Results of 653 Candidates Over 2025 WASSCE Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the entire results of 653 candidates who sat for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), after investigations confirmed their involvement in serious examination malpractice.

The sanctions follow the 40th meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee, where findings from WAEC’s investigative teams were reviewed and approved.

In a statement signed by John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, the Council stated that the 653 candidates had been caught with mobile phones inside examination halls—an offence that attracts the highest level of punishment under WAEC regulations.

“All results of candidates caught with mobile phones in the examination hall stand cancelled,” the statement noted.

WAEC further announced that 6,295 candidates had their results for specific subjects cancelled for bringing foreign materials—including prepared notes, textbooks, and printed answer sheets—into exam centres.

These banned items were found concealed in uniforms, socks, mathematical sets, and washrooms across various schools.

The Council disclosed that results for 1,066 candidates remain withheld. These include:

  • 908 candidates with withheld subject results
  • 158 candidates with their entire results withheld

These candidates are currently under further scrutiny for suspected involvement in impersonation, collusion, and syndicate-type cheating.

WAEC said decisions on these cases will be communicated after additional investigations are completed.

One of the most alarming findings was the withholding of subject results from 185 schools over widespread collusion.

WAEC said it detected highly identical responses across scripts—an indication of organised cheating during the exams.

Final determinations on these schools are expected before the end of December 2025.

In its latest anti-malpractice crackdown, WAEC revealed that 35 individuals, including 19 teachers, were implicated in activities that compromised the integrity of the examination process.

So far:

  • 19 suspects have been convicted in court
  • 16 others are yet to be arraigned

The offenders reportedly facilitated cheating rings, distributed answers, or attempted to smuggle foreign materials to candidates.

Despite the challenging environment, the Council expressed gratitude to key stakeholders for their role in the successful conduct of the 2025 WASSCE.

WAEC extended appreciation to:

  • The Ministry of Education
  • Ghana Education Service
  • Security agencies
  • Heads of schools
  • Supervisors
  • Invigilators and examination officials

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the credibility of the WASSCE and ensuring that Ghana’s examination system remains respected across West Africa.
