In a historic victory, Madam Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared the Member of Parliament-Elect for Dome Kwabenya.
Her win brings an end to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) long-standing dominance in the constituency, marking a significant political shift.
Speaking after her victory, Akurugu used a bold metaphor to celebrate the momentous achievement: “The elephant is a big animal, and when you kill it, before it finally dies, it has to take time and struggle. Today, the elephant is finally dead.” The statement, referencing the NPP’s elephant symbol, underscored the resilience and determination behind her campaign.
Akurugu’s victory came by a razor-thin margin of just 298 votes, with 50,967 votes to the NPP’s Michael Aaron Oquaye Jnr.’s 50,669.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced the results after resolving delays caused by missing pink sheets and disruptions at the collation center. Following extensive investigations and verification with party agents and officials, the EC confirmed that the results reflected “the will of the people as expressed at the polls.”
Dome Kwabenya has long been an NPP stronghold, making Akurugu’s win a landmark achievement for the NDC. She described the moment as a testament to the hard work and faith that drove her campaign. “The voice of the people has finally spoken, and to God be the glory,” she said, expressing gratitude to her supporters.
As the first NDC Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Akurugu pledged to work tirelessly to justify the confidence placed in her by constituents. “This is the first time the NDC has taken the seat, and it will take hard work to ensure the people maintain me for the long term,” she remarked.
Madam Akurugu also promised to prioritise the development of Dome Kwabenya, envisioning a constituency that thrives under her leadership. “I am committed to making Dome Kwabenya a place that everyone will love to come to,” she said, vowing to begin work immediately to bring transformative changes to the area.
