VIDEO: Interior Minister Warns of Illicit Activities in Unregulated Online Gaming Sector
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has issued a stern warning about the dangers of an unregulated online gaming industry, stating that without stricter controls, the sector could become a breeding ground for illicit financial activities and unlicensed operators.
During a visit to the Gaming Commission of Ghana, the minister emphasised the urgent need to overhaul existing regulations to keep pace with the rapidly evolving industry.
He noted that while gaming is a legitimate business, loopholes in regulation could expose Ghana to risks such as money laundering and underage gambling.

“The online gaming space is expanding rapidly, and without proper oversight, it could be exploited by bad actors,” he cautioned.
Hon. Muntaka commended the Gaming Commission for initiating reforms to the Gaming Act, which aims to introduce stricter enforcement mechanisms and improve monitoring of both physical and online gaming platforms.
He further called on gaming operators to prioritise responsible gaming and put stringent measures in place to prevent minors from accessing betting platforms.
The minister’s visit coincided with a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Commission to discuss the next phase of gaming regulation in Ghana. The forum also saw the unveiling of the Commission’s new logo, symbolising its commitment to enforcing industry-wide reforms.
As the online gaming industry continues to expand, the government’s renewed focus on regulation is seen as a critical step in safeguarding Ghana’s economic and social interests.
