A fire on Tuesday morning, December 2, gutted a room in one of the boys’ dormitories at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School, leaving several students exhausted and collapsing as they attempted to salvage their belongings, JoyNews’ Oti Regional Correspondent Peter Senoo has reported.
The blaze reportedly broke out around 9 a.m., rapidly consuming the dormitory room, destroying personal effects, and burning through the roofing structure. By the time the flames were brought under control, the room was completely devastated, with nothing left to salvage.

The Ghana National Fire Service faced major challenges in responding to the incident, as the only fire tender in the Kadjebi district was out of service. Firefighters were forced to rely on limited alternative methods to contain the blaze, prolonging the effort and increasing panic among students.
“Several students collapsed from fatigue and anxiety while trying to help evacuate items and control the fire,” the correspondent said.
School authorities, together with community members, worked tirelessly to stabilise the affected students. Those who collapsed received immediate attention, and the situation has since been brought under control.
The fire has reignited concerns about the availability of functional firefighting equipment in the district. Residents and education stakeholders are calling for urgent support to ensure that emergencies in schools can be effectively managed in the future.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and to assess the full extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, students have been advised to remain calm as the school administration coordinates temporary accommodation for those affected.
