VIDEO: Ernest Kumi’s Death Raised My BP — Upper Denkyira West MP Breaks Down Over Loss of Childhood Friend
The Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Hon. Rudolf Amoako-Gyampah, has opened up about the emotional toll the sudden death of his colleague and close friend, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has had on him—disclosing that he has since been seeking medical attention to monitor his blood pressure.
In an exclusive interview with journalist Kofi Nkansah, Hon. Amoako-Gyampah described the passing of the Akwatia MP as a deeply personal loss, revealing that the shock of the news caused his blood pressure to rise, prompting immediate medical attention.
“I’ve been seeing my doctor to check on my BP since I heard of Ernest’s death. I still can’t believe he’s gone,” he said solemnly.

According to him, the late Kumi was more than a political colleague—he was a childhood friend and schoolmate from their days at Adisadel College, and the two had entered Parliament together following the 2024 general election.
Reflecting on their journey, Hon. Amoako-Gyampah revealed how the late MP endured emotional stress and political pressure before his demise. He recounted private conversations with Kumi during the period when the High Court in Koforidua convicted him of contempt of court for defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as MP.
A bench warrant was subsequently issued for Ernest Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear for sentencing. Amoako-Gyampah shared that Kumi had confided in him about how some constituents doubted his leadership and told him, “We’ll see how you’ll lead this constituency.”
The Supreme Court later overturned the conviction and barred Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe from sentencing the MP, ruling in favor of Kumi.
