VIDEO: Be Circumspect in Media Reportage As Nation Mourns Helicopter Crash Victims – GJA President Urges

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the media to exercise caution and professionalism in their reportage as the nation comes to terms with the devastating loss of key government officials and others in the recent Adansi Akrofrom helicopter crash.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, claimed the lives of Hon. Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Hon. Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment; and six others.

Speaking on behalf of the GJA, Mr Dwumfour described the event as a “national tragedy” that must be handled with “decency and dignity”, stressing the need for journalists to report with accuracy, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility.

“The media must remember that this is not just a news story but a moment of national grief. We must be circumspect as the nation mourns its fallen heroes,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour expressed the association’s deep sorrow, noting that the GJA was heartbroken over the loss. He extended the association’s condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the bereaved families, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the people of Ghana.

He further urged Ghanaians to stand in solidarity with the families, particularly the widows, children, and parents of the deceased, emphasising that the loss of such gallant men is a blow not only to their loved ones but to the entire nation.

In addition to his tribute to the helicopter crash victims, the GJA President also consoled the families of 17 children who perished in a fatal road crash last month on the Accra–Kumasi Highway while on their way to a church programme.

“Though these children have been buried, the GJA stands with their families in heartfelt sympathy. May the good Lord keep the souls of these departed, and may they rest in perfect peace,” he said.
