Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Hospitalised, Set for Overseas Treatment

Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has been admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after falling ill following her official duties on Friday, March 28, 2025.

A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the Vice President received initial treatment at UGMC but will seek further medical care abroad based on expert recommendations. The statement, however, did not disclose specific details regarding her illness.

The announcement has stirred concern and well-wishes from citizens and political figures, who hope for her swift recovery. Further updates are expected as the vice president prepares to travel for specialised treatment.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, 73, made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President after being elected on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general election. She was sworn into office on January 7, 2025, pledging to work diligently toward Ghana’s development.

Born on November 22, 1951, in Komenda in the Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and public servant. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of Cape Coast and later obtained a master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature from York University in Canada.

Her academic journey saw her rise from a lecturer to become the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast in 2008, where she was recognised for promoting academic excellence and gender equality. In 2013, President Mahama appointed her as Minister of Education, a position in which she implemented significant reforms to enhance teacher training, expand access to education, and improve infrastructure in schools.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is married to Mr Badu Opoku-Agyemang, and they have three children. She remains a highly respected advocate for women’s empowerment and societal transformation.
