UG Eyes Laptop Assembly Plant as Ecobank’s 300-Device Donation Powers Student Access

The University of Ghana is considering plans to establish a laptop assembly plant to expand access to affordable devices for students, as its flagship “One Student, One Laptop” (1S1L) initiative continues to gain momentum.

Chairman of the 1S1L Committee, Prof. Peter Quartey, disclosed this during the presentation of the final batch of 100 laptops donated by Ecobank Ghana, bringing the bank’s total contribution to 300 devices.

He described the initiative as a critical intervention aimed at equipping students with the tools needed to learn effectively and prepare for the job market.

“This is a laudable initiative that is helping students to learn and be ready for the world of work, and I’m happy that it has really taken root,” he said.

Prof. Quartey explained that the programme currently operates on two key components.

The first involves donations of laptops to brilliant but needy students, ensuring that financial constraints do not limit access to digital learning tools.

The second component, still under discussion, is the establishment of a local assembly plant, which would allow laptops to be produced and sold at subsidised prices to students who do not qualify for free devices.

“That way, more students can acquire laptops at affordable rates,” he noted.

Commending Ecobank for its sustained support, Prof. Quartey revealed that the bank’s 300-laptop donation accounts for about 30 per cent of all devices received under the initiative so far.

He emphasised that such partnerships are essential to the success of the programme and the broader vision of digital inclusion at the university.

Prof. Quartey also highlighted the importance of collaboration between institutions, noting that the University of Ghana’s strong brand creates opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.

“If we associate with the UG brand, we also associate with you. Together, we can make our institutions bigger and better,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to Ecobank for what he described as a bold and impactful contribution to education.
