Two Suspected Soldiers Arrested Over Attempted Robbery at a Mining Site in Prestea

Police in Prestea have arrested two suspected military personnel and their two civilian accomplices after they allegedly attempted to rob the LongShine Mining Company Limited, a Chinese-owned mine, on Sunday, September 28.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of LongShine Mining, Mr Zion Rootman, the suspects stormed the mine’s site at Prestea-Obouhu in a pickup truck. The alleged military officers were clad in full uniform, while the two civilians had their faces concealed with masks.

Mr Rootman disclosed in an interview with Channel One News’ Akwasi Agyei Annim on Tuesday, October 1, that the company quickly alerted the Prestea Police upon noticing the suspicious intrusion.

“They came into our site in military uniform and masks, but our security protocols worked effectively. We informed the police immediately, and they moved swiftly to arrest them in the process,” Rootman said.

The suspects were later transferred to the Tarkwa Regional Police Command for further investigations.

The arrest has raised fresh concerns about security in Ghana’s mining communities, where criminal elements sometimes disguise themselves in military gear to intimidate and rob mining companies.

Police have yet to release the identities of the suspects, but investigations are ongoing to establish the extent of their involvement and whether they are connected to similar incidents in the area.
