Three Dead, Two Injured in Akyem Asafo Highway Crash Involving Trucks

A tragic accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway near Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region has claimed three lives and left two others in critical condition following a multiple-truck collision early Friday morning.

The incident, which occurred in the Abuakwa South Municipality at dawn, involved three trucks—a Scania (registration number GS 6429-11), a Howo tipper truck, and a stationary DAF trailer loaded with cocoa (registration number 6294-11).

According to eyewitness accounts, the DAF trailer had broken down and was abandoned in the middle of the road, causing the subsequent crash.

The violent impact led to the instant death of the Scania driver and two female passengers believed to be traders. Two other individuals sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (Bunso and Suhum stations), Suhum Police MTTD, and the Ghana Ambulance Service rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations and manage traffic congestion.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and identification. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the Accra-Kumasi stretch, especially around areas with stalled vehicles or poor visibility.
