Suspension of Chief Justice A Threat to Judicial Independence- Sammy Awuku

Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has sharply criticised the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, describing the move as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the judiciary and weaken Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Awuku’s remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was established in relation to three petitions seeking her removal from office.

Taking to Facebook, the Akuapim North MP voiced his disapproval, expressing deep concern over the implications of the suspension.

“This moment marks a concerning chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey,” he wrote.

He warned that the president’s action, if left unchecked, could set a dangerous precedent that undermines the independence of the judiciary — a fundamental pillar of democratic governance.

“History reminds us that absolute power can erode the very foundations of justice,” Awuku stressed.

Awuku’s criticism adds to a growing debate over the appropriateness and timing of the suspension, with some observers questioning whether the move was politically motivated.

The suspension has ignited fresh tensions between the executive and judicial arms of government, with many awaiting the outcome of the five-member committee currently tasked with investigating the allegations against Chief Justice Torkornoo.
