Suspected Killer of MoMo Vendor in Upper East Arrested in Savannah Region

Police in the Savannah Region have arrested Nuhu Mumuni, a prime suspect in the robbery and killing of mobile money vendor Benjamin Apuri and another victim in Pwalugu, Upper East Region.

The arrest was confirmed by COP Samuel Winful, Savannah Regional Police Commander, during a press briefing held in Damongo on Thursday, April 10.

“The suspect, Nuhu Mumuni, who was on the wanted list of the Upper East Region police, was arrested on April 8, 2025, at his hideout at Mankarigu,” COP Winful said.

The police say the arrest followed intelligence-led operations that tracked the suspect to Mankarigu, a suburb in the North Gonja district, where he had gone into hiding.

Mumuni was allegedly part of the gang involved in the March 3rd, 2025, deadly attack on Benjamin Apuri, a mobile money agent in Pwalugu, who was shot and killed during the robbery. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the scene.

COP Winful revealed that the suspect will be transferred to the Upper East Region for prosecution, as the incident and investigations fall under their jurisdiction.

“We are working closely with our colleagues in Upper East to ensure the suspect is made to face the full rigours of the law,” he assured.

The regional commander used the opportunity to caution mobile money vendors and small business operators across the country to be more vigilant.

“They should be very careful and know their surroundings. Any move seen around with any strange behaviour should be monitored and communicated to the police for action,” he advised.

The murder of Benjamin Apuri had sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for increased protection for mobile money operators, who remain vulnerable to attacks by armed robbers due to the high volumes of cash they handle.

This latest arrest has been welcomed as a positive step, but many are demanding more proactive measures, including improved surveillance, police patrols in high-risk zones, and community-police collaboration to clamp down on such crimes.

Authorities say more suspects are being tracked, and investigations remain ongoing.
