The Supreme Court has, in a unanimous decision, overturned rulings by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal which had ordered the reinstatement of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II’s name in the National House of Chiefs registry as Ga Mantse.
The apex court’s ruling, delivered on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, brings a significant turn in the long-standing Ga chieftaincy dispute, reaffirming National House of Chiefs’s claim to the revered stool.
The legal tussle originated from a prolonged chieftaincy conflict heard by the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, which determined that Nii Tackie Adama Latse II was not the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse stool. Consequently, his name was expunged from the National House of Chiefs’ register.

In a bid to reverse that decision, Nii Tackie Adama Latse II’s legal team filed an application for mandamus at the High Court, compelling the National House of Chiefs to re-enter his name. The court granted the request, and the Court of Appeal subsequently affirmed that ruling when the National House of Chiefs challenged it.
However, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who was enstooled in 2020, filed a certiorari application at the Supreme Court through his lead counsel, Professor Peter Atudiwe Atupare. He argued that his right to natural justice was breached, as he was not made a party to the High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings, even though the ruling directly affected his status as Ga Mantse.
The Supreme Court sided with King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, holding that the failure to include him in the earlier suits violated the principles of natural justice. The court subsequently quashed the decisions of both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, and dismissed the order that sought to re-enter Nii Tackie Adama Latse II’s name into the registry of chiefs.
The ruling is seen as a major legal and symbolic victory for King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and may put to rest one of the most contentious chieftaincy disputes in the Greater Accra Region.
