Stop maligning public officials carrying out lawful duties – A-G scolds Afenyo-Markin

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has cautioned Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against using his parliamentary immunity to defame public officials engaged in legally sanctioned duties.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, Dr Ayine specifically referenced the ongoing investigation into the reported raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison.

Dr Ayine clarified that the action at Dr Addison’s residence was a lawful search conducted in accordance with legal provisions, countering claims that it was an unauthorized warrantless raid.

He further revealed that a recording exists in which Dr Addison himself makes remarks regarding the incident.

“If the Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin is daring me, we will make that recording available to the media,” Dr Ayine stated, emphasizing that the facts of the case are indisputable.

Dr Ayine reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards in his role as Attorney General.

“I am the leader of the bar, and I will act in the best interests of the ethics of the profession. Everyone at the bar knows me for that, so I won’t do anything unethical,” he asserted.

He also disclosed that he had personally advised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Security to ensure that their investigations remain within the confines of the law.

“I have advised both EOCO and National Security about staying within the bounds of the law when conducting investigations,” he noted.

Reiterating his stance, Dr Ayine urged Afenyo-Markin to refrain from spreading misinformation or making defamatory remarks under the shield of parliamentary immunity.

“Afenyo-Markin should not abuse his parliamentary immunity by defaming public officials who are conducting normal, legally sanctioned public business,” he warned.

As tensions continue to rise over the controversy, all eyes remain on the government’s next steps in addressing allegations surrounding the case.
