The newly appointed Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, officially assumed office on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Wasting no time, he convened a crucial meeting with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address pressing concerns regarding stadium security and the future of Ghanaian football.
The meeting came in the wake of a tragic incident during a Ghana Premier League fixture between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park in Nsoatre, which led to the death of an Asante Kotoko fan. The unfortunate event reignited conversations about safety at football match venues across the country.

GFA General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, briefed the minister on the ongoing investigations, assuring him that the matter was being treated as a criminal case.
He emphasised the association’s commitment to fully cooperating with security agencies to ensure that justice is served and those responsible are held accountable.
Hon. Adams expressed his deep concern over the loss of life, describing it as a severe blot on Ghanaian football.
He assured the public that no individual found culpable would be shielded, adding that the full force of the law would be brought to bear on those responsible.
The minister was updated on measures taken by the GFA following the incident, including the temporary suspension of the league to allow for a reassessment of security protocols. The GFA, in consultation with key stakeholders, has developed enhanced safety guidelines for match venues, which will be reviewed and implemented under the minister’s guidance.
In a bid to restore sanity to Ghanaian football, Hon. Adams directed the Chief Director of the Sports Ministry, in collaboration with the GFA, to establish a task force to reassess the suitability of stadiums for league matches. The team will determine which venues meet the required safety and infrastructural standards for hosting top-flight games.
Recognising hooliganism as a longstanding challenge in Ghanaian football, the minister urged the GFA to intensify its “Say No to Hooliganism” campaign.
He stressed the importance of education for football fans, players, and officials to promote discipline and sportsmanship at match venues.
Beyond security, Hon. Adams expressed his desire to bring football back to life in Ghana by improving matchday experiences for fans and reigniting their passion for the local game. He emphasised that his administration would focus on finding practical solutions to challenges facing Ghanaian sports, rather than engaging in blame games.
The meeting concluded with the minister calling on all stakeholders—clubs, players, referees, security agencies, and supporters—to work together in transforming Ghanaian football.
He assured continuous engagement with the GFA and other sports bodies to ensure the holistic development of sports in the country.
“We all have a role to play in improving Ghana football,” Hon. Adams stated. “This ministry is committed to collaboration and decisive action to make our sports industry safer, stronger, and more exciting.”
With his swift intervention, Ghanaian football enthusiasts are hopeful that this marks the beginning of a new era, where security at match venues is prioritised, hooliganism is curbed, and the nation’s football regains its lost glory.
