Sophia Akuffo Slams Removal of CJ Torkornoo, Says Allegations ‘Lacked Gravity’

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has strongly criticized the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, insisting that the allegations leveled against her were not weighty enough to justify such a drastic decision.

Justice Torkornoo was removed from office on Monday, September 1, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama, acting in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution. The move followed a petition filed by a citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, and an investigative process carried out by a committee constituted under Article 146(6).

In a yet-to-be-aired exclusive interview with TV3 on Tuesday, September 2, Madam Akuffo—who also serves on the Council of State—slammed the process, describing it as undeserving of any judge, particularly the head of Ghana’s judiciary.

“The [allegations] lack the gravity that will lead to a grave outcome such as the removal of the head of an institution of justice,” she argued, adding that the procedure amounted to a “rigmarole” that eroded the dignity of the judiciary.

President Mahama’s decision has already sparked intense public debate, with critics questioning whether the removal was politically motivated, while defenders insist that the president was constitutionally bound to follow the committee’s recommendations.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the president and minister for government communications, explained that the president acted strictly within the constitutional framework.

Justice Torkornoo’s removal marks the second time in recent memory that the head of Ghana’s judiciary has faced such an outcome, raising fresh concerns about the independence and protection of the judicial arm of government.
