Security and sanitation are my top priorities – Linda Ocloo

Linda Akweley Ocloo, the newly sworn-in Greater Accra Regional Minister, has identified security and sanitation as her top priorities in efforts to improve the capital city.

In her first address to the management and staff of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council on February 3, 2025, Ocloo unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at tackling some of the region’s most pressing challenges.

A key element of Ocloo’s plan is the reintroduction of the Regional Sanitation Day, along with a new award scheme designed to recognise the cleanest city in the region.

The initiative is part of her broader goal to improve sanitation standards in the capital. She also expressed her commitment to supporting municipal and local district assemblies in becoming more self-sustaining as part of the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”

“Sanitation is one of the biggest challenges we face in Greater Accra. The Regional Sanitation Day will help us take steps toward cleaner streets, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future,” Ocloo stated.

Additionally, the minister emphasised the importance of strengthening decentralisation and enhancing participatory governance. She intends to work closely with traditional authorities, religious groups, and other local stakeholders to drive these efforts forward.

“I will collaborate with traditional leaders, religious organizations, and other key community groups to deepen decentralization and ensure inclusive governance,” Ocloo remarked.

She also highlighted the need for empowering local district assemblies to improve revenue generation for sustainable development.

Ocloo outlined plans to continue supporting the zonal and area councils, ensuring they monitor and provide technical support to local assemblies, as required by the Local Governance Act 936.

With a focus on community-driven solutions and decentralisation, Ocloo aims to foster greater participation and collaboration in tackling the region’s challenges, ensuring the capital’s growth is sustainable and inclusive.
