Sam George Promises Review of Internet Speed and Power Challenges at Coding Centres
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has promised to investigate internet connectivity challenges at Regional Information Centres hosting the One Million Coders Programme.
He said the ministry would work with the relevant implementation team and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) to assess connectivity problems and determine how internet speeds at the centres could be improved.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George gave the assurance during an interaction with students at the Kwadaso Regional Information Centre in the Ashanti Region, where participants raised concerns about the quality of internet access and the effect of power outages on their training.
“For especially our RICs, we’re supposed to have some dedicated capacity, working with NITA to ensure that the capacity here is good,” he said.
The minister described the concerns as useful feedback and pledged to engage the team responsible for implementing the programme to identify the cause of the connectivity difficulties.
“I will work with the team to see what’s going on here and what we can do to quickly optimise the speed,” he stated.
On power outages, Mr George said the government would consider possible interventions but cautioned that providing generators for every learning centre could be financially challenging.
He disclosed that the programme had almost 167 centres across the country, making it difficult to provide backup generators for all the facilities.
However, he said the ministry could explore options specifically for the Regional Information Centres, given their size and role in supporting digital training.
“But maybe for our RICs, given the size of the RICs, we may look at doing something in the 16 RICs,” he said.
The minister’s comments followed questions from participants seeking improvements in the conditions under which they undertake their training.
Sam George said feedback from learners was important in ensuring that the programme delivered its intended benefits and that the ministry addressed challenges affecting access to digital skills development.
