PUWU mounts nationwide protest against privatization of ECG and NEDCo

Tension is rising sharply across Ghana as members of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) ramp up protests against the government’s decision to introduce private sector participation in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

In a powerful show of defiance, red flags have been hoisted at all 92 district offices and 14 regional administrative centres nationwide. The escalating protest follows confirmation by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson that Cabinet has officially approved the contentious plan.

At the national headquarters of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and ECG at Electro Volta House in Accra, the atmosphere was charged, with red cloths wrapped around signposts and massive protest banners plastered at the main entrance.

Security personnel stationed at these facilities, speaking to Citi News, confirmed that the early protest actions are just the beginning. Workers are set to escalate their demonstrations starting Monday, April 28, 2025, by wearing red armbands and embarking on further coordinated actions.

PUWU has voiced deep concerns that the government’s move risks undermining the conditions of service for utility workers and could compromise the effective and equitable management of Ghana’s electricity distribution network.

Union leaders argue that previous experiments with private sector involvement have failed to deliver tangible improvements and instead left workers and consumers worse off.

The growing agitation sets the stage for potential widespread industrial action if government authorities do not engage with PUWU to address their grievances.

As Ghana’s power sector faces yet another pivotal moment, all eyes are on whether government officials will open dialogue with the union to avert possible disruptions in electricity supply.
