Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo, a distinguished political scientist at the University of Ghana, has been appointed as the acting chief executive officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority. The appointment was made by President John Dramani Mahama and marks a significant leadership transition within the Authority.
Prof. Gyampo succeeds Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, who was appointed by the Akufo-Addo administration in December 2024.
His extensive expertise in governance and public administration is expected to strengthen the Authority’s role in regulating Ghana’s shipping and logistics sector.

Born on March 31, 1977, in Accra, Prof. Gyampo has built a remarkable career in academia, governance, and public policy.
He is a professor of political science and the founding director of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana. With two decades of teaching and research experience, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role.
Prof. Gyampo holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Ghana and has pursued advanced studies at Tufts University in Boston, USA.
His research interests include governance, leadership, democratic development in Ghana and Africa, youth empowerment, natural resource management, electoral studies, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, and peacebuilding efforts in Africa.
His academic contributions extend beyond Ghana, having served as a visiting scholar at the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of South Florida and as a visiting professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Bristol. His work has had a significant impact on global scholarship.
Prior to his current academic position, Prof. Gyampo spent 14 years at the Governance Unit of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Ghana), rising from research assistant to senior research fellow.
During his tenure, he led critical socio-economic and governance research projects, providing evidence-based policy recommendations to address Ghana’s key challenges.
Through his research and public engagements, Prof. Gyampo has played a pivotal role in shaping national discourse, using roundtables and media platforms to influence policy and governance reforms. His appointment to the Ghana Shippers Authority is expected to bring strategic direction and innovative solutions to the nation’s shipping and logistics industry.
