The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has stated that while it is possible to make an appeal on humanitarian grounds for the payment of the entitlements of the removed former Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, her own actions have complicated such efforts.
Speaking in an interview following the legal tussle surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal, Prof. Gyampo said he belongs to the school of thought that believes the President can exercise discretion to settle her entitlements, despite the constitutional consequences of her removal.
“Though I belong to the School of Thought that believes that an appeal on humanitarian grounds could be made to the President to pay the entitlements of the removed CJ, her own pointless conduct makes it difficult for all of us,” Prof. Gyampo stated.

He explained that instead of opting for a dignified exit through resignation, which could have preserved her benefits, the former Chief Justice chose to embark on a legal route that has now worsened her situation and polarised national discourse.
According to Prof. Gyampo, public sympathy has been eroded due to her approach, making it politically challenging for the presidency to consider a special dispensation.
“Her decision to take this combative legal path has weakened the moral basis for any humanitarian plea. Even those who initially sympathised with her are finding it difficult to make a case now,” he noted.
