Prioritize Accountability for Individuals Involved in Post-Electoral Violence- Minority to Dominic Ayine
The minority in Parliament has called on Justice Minister-Designate Dominic Ayine to prioritise accountability for individuals involved in post-electoral disturbances following Ghana’s December 7, 2024, general elections.
During the parliamentary vetting of President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns about the impact of such incidents on the country’s democratic stability.
Addressing the nominee, Afenyo-Markin underscored the importance of addressing the violent aftermath of the elections. “The disturbing videos circulating show the severe threats these actions pose to our democracy,” he stated. “If confirmed, the Attorney General nominee must ensure thorough investigations and accountability for these violations, as no crime committed in pursuit of political power should go unpunished.”
The minority leader pointed to widely shared media reports and videos that documented incidents of violence, including attacks on government facilities, and stressed that decisive action was necessary to preserve Ghana’s democratic values.
Afenyo-Markin emphasised the importance of a fair and impartial judicial process. He called on Ayine to ensure that investigations into the disturbances are conducted without political bias and that all perpetrators, regardless of their affiliations, face prosecution in accordance with the law.
“Ghana’s democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere where violence is used as a tool for political gain. Upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for victims of these disturbances is not just a matter of legality but of national interest,” he added.
