The Private Newspaper and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has used the occasion of World News Day 2025 to highlight the growing challenges threatening the sustainability and independence of Ghana’s news industry, while calling for urgent collective support from the public, government, and businesses.
In a statement signed by its president, David Tamakloe, PRINPAG extended warm greetings to Ghanaians, stressing the critical role publishers play as “gatekeepers of information, guardians against misinformation and disinformation, champions of diverse views, and defenders of free speech.” The association warned that without a vibrant media, society risks disorder and weakened accountability.
PRINPAG painted a stark picture of the industry’s financial woes, pointing to shrinking advertising revenues, escalating production costs, and the soaring price of printing inputs such as paper and ink.

“Because media houses depend heavily on ads, this vulnerability threatens sustainability,” the statement cautioned, noting that many advertisers are either reducing budgets, shifting to digital platforms, or negotiating lower rates, leaving traditional publishers struggling for survival.
Beyond financial pressures, the association raised concerns about press freedom, citing cases where journalists and publishers have been intimidated, summoned, or subjected to regulatory actions for publishing controversial reports. PRINPAG warned that such practices not only undermine media independence but also erode the foundations of Ghana’s democracy.
While acknowledging the industry’s difficulties, PRINPAG urged the public to recognise and support the crucial work of the media in shaping national discourse and holding leaders accountable. The association commended individuals, businesses, and institutions that continue to invest in media sustainability through advertising and partnerships.
The statement also challenged publishers to remain committed to professional excellence, urging them to uphold ethical standards, embrace constructive criticism, and adopt new technologies to modernise operations and build stronger public trust.
PRINPAG called on the government, corporate Ghana, and international donors to channel more investment into media capacity building and technological adoption, stressing that a resilient and independent press is central to Ghana’s democratic progress.
“As we mark this day, we also recognise the need for constant improvement,” the statement concluded.
World News Day, observed annually across the globe, celebrates the indispensable role of journalism in promoting accountability, democracy, and informed societies. In Ghana, PRINPAG’s renewed call adds urgency to ongoing conversations about how to secure the future of news publishing amid digital disruption, rising costs, and changing consumer behaviours.
