President Mahama to Join African Leaders in Nairobi for AU Reforms

President John Dramani Mahama will participate in a high-level meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside several African leaders to discuss institutional reforms in the African Union (AU).

The meeting, spearheaded by Kenyan President William Ruto, the AU Champion for Institutional Reforms, aims to enhance the AU’s operational efficiency, fund its peace operations independently, and strengthen its support to member states.

The gathering will provide an avenue for in-depth discussions on the state of the AU and strategies for its transformation. A consolidated report on the proposed reforms will be presented at the 38th Ordinary General Assembly session of the AU, slated for February 15-16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

President Mahama’s contributions to the meeting are expected to be pivotal, given his wealth of experience as a former chair of ECOWAS and his standing as a respected leader in African politics.

President Mahama, whose recent political comeback drew significant attention, will also use the occasion to engage in bilateral talks with other leaders as part of his efforts to strengthen Ghana’s position and influence on the continent.

The meeting reflects a shared commitment among African leaders to reform the AU and position it to better address the continent’s challenges and priorities.
