President Biden Names Delegation for John Mahama’s Inauguration

The President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden Jr., has appointed a high-level delegation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, January 7, 2025, in Accra.

Leading the U.S. delegation will be Shalanda D. Young, the Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget, according to a press statement issued by the White House.

The statement reads:
“The President today announced the designation of a Presidential Delegation to attend the inauguration of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on 7th January 2025 in Accra, Ghana. The Honourable Shalanda D. Young, Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget, will lead the delegation.”

The delegation includes prominent officials such as:

  • The Honourable Virginia E. Palmer, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana.
  • The Honourable Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, California.
  • The Honourable Frances Z. Brown, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs, National Security Council, The White House.

The inauguration, which will be held at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, marks a historic return to power for Mr. Mahama, following his resounding victory in the December 7 elections.

The ceremony is expected to draw dignitaries from across the globe, including the outgoing president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who will officially hand over the reins of power to Mr. Mahama.

President-elect Mahama has pledged to usher in a new era of transformation for Ghana. His key policies include the introduction of a 24-hour economy to drive job creation, the establishment of a Women Development Bank to support female entrepreneurs with low-interest loans, and reforms aimed at improving accessibility to tertiary education, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The event is set to reinforce Ghana’s democratic credentials as a beacon of stability in the region.
