Gov't Orders Direct Data Loading on OMCP Devices to Prevent Abuse

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has directed the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to load internet data directly onto devices at One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) centres instead of transferring data to site managers.

The directive follows feedback gathered during the Minister’s two-day tour of OMCP centres in the Volta Region, where he interacted with learners and assessed challenges affecting the programme.

Hon. Samuel Nartey George said the change was intended to reduce the risk of data being diverted from its intended purpose and ensure that learners had direct access to the resources required for their training.

“Let's load the devices,” he said, explaining that data should no longer be transferred to site managers.

He added, "Let's lead people, not into temptation.”

The Minister said the tour had provided an opportunity to hear directly from beneficiaries, assess what was working and identify challenges, including internet availability and connection speeds at some centres.

He said the Ministry would work with service providers to ensure that the centres received appropriate internet speeds to support the programme.

Hon. Sam George also urged more Ghanaians, including young people and older citizens, to enrol in the digital skills initiative.

He said the programme offered an opportunity for participants to acquire skills that could improve their employment and entrepreneurial prospects.

The Minister encouraged prospective learners to register online or use designated learning centres to access the courses.
