More Than 1,600 Rural Telephony Sites Reportedly Completed, 1,400 Active — Sam George
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, says more than 1,600 rural telephony sites have reportedly been completed under Ghana’s ongoing project, with about 1,400 currently active and carrying network traffic.
However, he said the government would undertake a reconciliation exercise to establish the actual completion and operational status of the sites before enforcing its deadline for outstanding work.
Speaking after a two-day tour of rural telephony sites and One Million Coders Programme centres in the Volta Region, Hon. Sam George said the project was expected to cover approximately 2,016 sites.
He said the figures available to him indicated progress but acknowledged that some sites remained unfinished even though the contractor had been paid in full and the original completion deadline had passed.
The Minister disclosed that a meeting involving GIFEC, the contractor and subcontractors had been scheduled for Tuesday in Accra to address the outstanding work and reconcile the project’s status.
He said the contractor would have a maximum of 30 days after that meeting to complete the remaining sites, after which surcharges would begin to be imposed where necessary.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George stressed that the completion of the current project would not provide universal coverage, as nearly 5,000 communities still needed to be connected.
He said the government was exploring ways to secure additional resources to expand the network and upgrade existing infrastructure to 4G.
Sam George expressed hope that the 2027 national budget would provide funding for further expansion of rural telecommunications infrastructure.
He said reliable connectivity remained essential to development in underserved communities and would require sustained investment beyond the current project.
