President Akufo-Addo Rejects Petition to Remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed a petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, describing the allegations against her as unsubstantiated.

The petition, filed by Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, accused the Chief Justice of misconduct and incompetence. However, in a statement issued on January 6, the Presidency announced that consultations with the Council of State revealed no prima facie case to justify further action.

“The Office of the President wishes to inform the general public that, after a thorough and careful review of the petition for the removal of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in consultation with the Council of State, has concluded that the petition does not disclose a prima facie case warranting further action,” the statement read.

The Presidency also noted the petition’s failure to provide adequate evidence or documentation to support the claims.

Furthermore, the Office of the President cautioned against undermining judicial independence through unfounded accusations, reiterating the importance of addressing grievances through constitutional mechanisms.
