Police Deploy Personnel For Two-Day National Cleanup Exercise
Thousands of police officers have temporarily swapped law enforcement duties for sanitation work as they join communities across the country in the two-day National General Cleaning Exercise aimed at restoring flood-affected areas and reducing the risk of future disasters.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said it has deployed personnel nationwide and provided sanitation equipment to support the exercise, which commenced on Friday, July 10, 2026.
The Service said the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding following the devastating June 29 floods.
According to the Police Administration, officers have been equipped with brooms, wheelbarrows, tricycles and other sanitation tools to facilitate clean-up activities in communities across the country.
The Service also called on members of the public to join the exercise and work alongside security personnel to keep their surroundings clean.
“Join our officers in various communities across the country; let us keep Ghana safe and clean,” the statement said.
The nationwide clean-up exercise was announced after the June 29 floods, which claimed at least 13 lives, displaced thousands of residents, destroyed homes and businesses, damaged public infrastructure and renewed concerns over poor drainage systems and indiscriminate waste disposal.
As part of the government’s response, President John Dramani Mahama directed Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and heads of public institutions to leave their offices and lead clean-up activities in their respective communities.
The two-day exercise forms part of measures outlined by the government’s Post-Flood Mitigation Committee to improve sanitation, desilt drains and minimise the risk of future flooding.
