The arrest forms part of enhanced New Year security operations aimed at curbing crimes such as robbery, theft, and attacks on individuals during the festive season.
The IGP Special Operations Team has been operating in Tamale since November as part of broader efforts to strengthen security in the metropolis. The team, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, has been conducting regular patrols across identified crime-prone and vulnerable areas.
These sustained operations have resulted in the arrest of several suspected drug peddlers across various districts in the Northern Region.
Prior to the deployment of the special team, the Northern Region was widely considered a hub for drug-related activities, prompting concerns from residents and stakeholders. The situation led some lecturers of the University for Development Studies (UDS) and other concerned citizens to formally petition the Inspector-General of Police, calling for urgent intervention to address rising crime levels in the region.
Traditional authorities in the Northern Region have since commended the IGP Special Operations Team for its role in restoring safety and maintaining law and order in Tamale and surrounding areas.
