Parliament, NPP Leadership Pay Tribute to Late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi

A high-powered delegation from the leadership of Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, July 8, visited the family residence of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, to express their condolences following his untimely passing.

The delegation, led by Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, included Majority and Minority Leaders, MPs from both sides of the House, and several party executives and national figures. Together, they offered their sympathies to the grieving family and signed the official book of condolence, which was opened in honour of the late lawmaker.

The visit formed part of a series of tributes and mourning activities following the sudden death of the young legislator, whose passing has shocked the nation.

At the family home, a sombre atmosphere hung in the air as relatives, colleagues, friends, and supporters gathered in sorrow. Many wept openly, sharing stories of Kumi’s warmth, humility, and unwavering dedication to the people of Akwatia and to the nation at large.

“He was a rising star in Parliament,” one distraught party member said. “His contributions on the floor of the House and his commitment to his constituents were remarkable. This is a huge loss.”

Mourners, dressed in traditional black and red mourning attire, held portraits and keepsakes, visibly shaken by the death of a man whose political journey had just begun to blossom.

The book of condolence remains open to the public at the family residence, giving constituents, colleagues, and admirers the opportunity to pen heartfelt messages in memory of Ernest Kumi—a leader remembered not just for his political ideals but for the kindness and hope he inspired.

Details of funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days, with a state-level memorial under discussion given the MP’s role in national service.

Kumi’s passing comes just months after his swearing-in as MP for Akwatia, a seat he won in the 2024 general election on the ticket of the ruling NPP.
