Parliament has officially commended Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, for their impressive performance at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a historic bronze medal.
The recognition came during the team’s visit to Parliament on Tuesday, July 29, where Members of Parliament warmly received the players and technical team following their return from Morocco. The Black Queens clinched third place after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa, marking Ghana’s best finish at the continental tournament since 2016.

MPs praised the team for their grit, discipline, and determination, which they said had reignited national pride and strengthened the call for greater investment in women’s football.
The Queens arrived in Ghana on Monday, July 28, and have since been celebrated by fans, officials, and dignitaries. Their activities included a symbolic visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum to pay homage to Ghana’s first president.
In addition to the team’s overall success, two standout players—midfielder Grace Asantewaa and captain Portia Boakye—were named in the 2024 WAFCON Team of the Tournament, underscoring their individual brilliance during the campaign.
Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, in his remarks, urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association to sustain support for the team and build on this momentum ahead of future international competitions.
The Black Queens’ achievement has been hailed as a turning point for women’s football in Ghana, with calls growing for improved infrastructure, funding, and training opportunities to ensure long-term success.
