Over 600,000 Ghana Cards remain unclaimed – National Identification Authority

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has taken a significant step towards resolving a longstanding backlog of unprinted Ghana Cards by acquiring 700,000 blank cards.

This move is expected to address delays that have persisted since 2023, providing relief to thousands of applicants awaiting their identification documents.

Despite this progress, the NIA is grappling with a separate challenge: over 600,000 Ghana Cards, already printed and ready for collection, remain unclaimed at regional and district offices across the country. These uncollected cards have been piling up since 2018, raising concerns about public awareness and the efficiency of the collection process.

In a statement dated February 18, 2025, the NIA confirmed that the newly acquired blank cards will be used to print pending records, including first-time issuances, card replacements, and updates to personal information. To expedite this process, the Acting Executive Secretary has assembled a technical team tasked with ensuring swift printing and distribution of the cards to district offices nationwide.

As part of efforts to resolve the unclaimed card situation, the NIA is urging applicants to visit their respective collection centres and retrieve their cards. The Authority is also working on an improved system to enhance the distribution and retrieval process, although specific details of this plan remain undisclosed.

The Ghana Card plays a crucial role in national identification, serving as a mandatory document for all Ghanaians aged 15 and above. It is required for accessing essential services such as banking, healthcare, and voter registration. Given its significance, the NIA is calling on individuals to collect their cards promptly to prevent future delays and enhance the efficiency of national identification services.

With the infusion of new blank cards and enhanced distribution efforts, the NIA aims to streamline the identification process and ensure that more Ghanaians have access to their official identity documents without unnecessary obstacles.
