NPP used my popularity to gain votes – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has voiced concerns over what he describes as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) use of his celebrity status to sway voters ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Gyan, who had been appointed head of the “Youth and Sports” subcommittee for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, stepped down abruptly just weeks before election day.

In a statement following his resignation, Gyan cited a renewed commitment to humanitarian work as his primary reason for leaving.

However, a viral video showing a heated exchange between him and an NPP official raised questions about deeper tensions within the campaign.

During a live Instagram session, Gyan accused the party of exploiting his popularity to gain political mileage. “They [NPP] used my name and reputation to get votes,” he said, expressing disappointment over his involvement being reduced to a tool for political gain.

Despite his brief tenure, Gyan’s association with the campaign failed to deliver the desired outcome for the NPP. The party’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lost the election to John Dramani Mahama, who garnered 56.81% of the votes compared to Bawumia’s 41.40%.
