The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tatale Sanguli constituency of the Northern Region has suspended 58 members on allegations of misconduct during the recently concluded elections.
According to the constituency chairman, the suspended members are accused of failing to support the party’s official candidate, a violation of the NPP’s constitution.
In a letter signed by the constituency chairman and addressed to the national and regional executives, the party stated that the decision to suspend the members was taken after evidence emerged of actions deemed detrimental to the party’s unity and electoral success.
The letter, sighted by Puretvonline.com, outlines the alleged offences but does not detail the specific evidence against the suspended members.
One of the suspended members, Napare Prosper, a former communication officer for the constituency, has strongly denied the accusations. Speaking to the media, Prosper dismissed claims that he campaigned against the party’s candidate and criticised the decision as unjust.
“I have seen the letter on social media saying that I have been suspended for not supporting the MP, but I want to state on record that I did not campaign against the duly confirmed candidate,” Prosper said.
He further demanded a fair hearing, challenging the constituency chairman to provide evidence of his alleged misconduct within 24 hours.
“I did not in any way campaign against the candidate, and I did not breach any of the party’s constitution, so they should give us a fair hearing,” he added.
