The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced the timetable for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2026 general elections, setting January 31, 2026, as the date for the decisive vote to elect a new flagbearer.
According to the schedule released by the party, nominations will open on Monday, July 29, 2025, and close a month later on Wednesday, August 28, 2025. This window allows aspirants ample time to pick and file nomination forms.
The vetting of all aspirants will take place from September 15 to 22, 2025, during which the party’s vetting committee will assess candidates’ eligibility and qualifications. A report of the vetting process will be submitted to both the National Executive Council (NEC) and National Council on September 29.

A brief petition period will follow from September 30 to October 3, providing an opportunity for any aggrieved parties to contest the vetting outcomes.
NEC and the National Council will reconvene on October 7 to consider and finalize any issues before the party proceeds to publish the final list of qualified candidates on October 8.
Balloting to determine the order of candidates on the ballot paper will take place on October 10, and the formal notice of poll will be issued on October 17.
Should no candidate secure the required majority in the first round, a run-off election has been scheduled for February 14, 2026.
The party has urged all aspirants and their supporters to respect the guidelines and uphold the democratic values of the NPP throughout the process.
