Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of dangerously politicising the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that their actions could inflict lasting damage on the judiciary’s integrity.
Speaking on PM Express on Joy News Monday night, Gbande said the NPP’s public posture and street demonstrations over the suspension risk dragging the Chief Justice into partisan politics.
“You are further exposing the Chief Justice politically and aligning her to a particular opinion or argument from a group of people, which is not fair to her,” he said.

His comments come amid growing national debate over the President’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice—a move the NPP has condemned as politically motivated. The controversy has intensified in recent days, culminating in a street protest in Accra led by the party.
But Gbande argued that the protests are inconsistent with the NPP’s supposed respect for constitutional processes and could undermine the very institution they claim to defend.
“They are inviting President Mahama to do a great injustice to the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana,” he said, cautioning the NPP to “hasten slowly.”
He also rejected criticisms aimed at NDC figures like Sammy Gyamfi and Edudzi Tamakloe for commenting on the matter. Gbande questioned why the NPP was silent when pro-NPP broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere published details of the Chief Justice’s response, yet now accused others of politicising the issue.
“Why is it that Egyapa Mercer is accusing Sammy Gyamfi and Edudzi of commenting, when Paul Adom-Otchere was the one who actually serialised the response and put it out there?” he asked.
Gbande insisted that the process initiated by former President John Mahama leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension was constitutionally sound. He further dismissed claims from some in the NPP that the protest was in part motivated by fears of a future constitutional interpretation that could allow Mahama to seek a third term.
“It is no longer just that Chief Justice Torkornoo was unfairly treated, but that they can see into the future that President Mahama would have to do a third term. And for that, they are scared,” he said.
When asked if Mahama was contemplating a third term, Gbande declined to engage, calling it a distraction.
“If the NPP believes in constitutionalism, they should allow the process to unfold. But they’re not just attacking the process now. They are aligning a sitting Chief Justice to a political party, and that is reckless,” he said.
