The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the recent suspension of three of its Members of Parliament (MPs) by Speaker Alban Bagbin, branding his actions as autocratic and a dangerous threat to democratic principles in Ghana’s Parliament.
The suspensions, which also affected a National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, followed a tumultuous scene during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 30, 2025.
This disruption in Parliament has since sparked heated debates, with accusations of misconduct and a breakdown of order among legislators.
In a statement released on February 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong expressed the party’s outrage, offering full solidarity with the affected MPs. He further criticised Speaker Bagbin for allegedly disregarding the Constitution and undermining the principles of natural justice in his decision-making.
“The Party sees this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the statement read.
Frimpong emphasised that the NPP does not accept the Speaker’s decision, calling it an infringement on the Constitution and fair parliamentary procedures.
He also pointed out that this move was an attempt to weaken the opposition’s ability to act as a check on the government.
“The Party hereby reiterates its position that it stands with its eighty-eight (88) gallant Hon. Members to address all forms of repression and unfairness in the application of the rules governing Parliament and the Nation,” Frimpong added.
In the wake of the suspension, the NPP has vowed to resist any efforts they believe seek to undermine the role of the minority in Parliament, emphasising their commitment to holding the government accountable and preserving the integrity of the parliamentary process.
