The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned and distanced itself from death threats issued against President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, describing such acts as alien to the party’s principles.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah made the remarks during a courtesy call on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership at their headquarters on Wednesday, August 13, where he met with NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and other executives.
“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah said.

While acknowledging that inflammatory remarks have emerged from both political camps, Koduah stressed that wishing death on anyone—especially a political opponent—undermines Ghana’s democratic culture.
“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy. So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologize to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he added.
His comments follow an ongoing Ghana Police Service investigation into a viral TikTok video in which an individual is heard threatening the lives of the president and his wife. Police have confirmed the video’s content constitutes credible threats.
Two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have so far been arrested and are assisting with investigations. Efforts are underway to apprehend others connected to the recording and distribution of the video.
An Accra Circuit Court has granted Prince Ofori bail of GHS100,000 with three sureties—two of whom must be gainfully employed. He is also required to submit his passport to the police and reappear in court on August 25, 2025.
