No Presidential Pardons Granted After Council of State Consultation- Former Dep. AG reveals

Former Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has clarified that the decision not to grant presidential pardons to certain individuals was made after a thorough consultation process involving the Council of State and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a statement made on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 11, Tuah-Yeboah revealed that the Council of State had thoroughly vetted a letter submitted by the former president on January 2.

This letter outlined the president’s review of the prisoners’ cases, which considered factors such as their health, the length of their imprisonment, and other mitigating circumstances.

“The President consulted with the Council of State, and at the end of the day, a decision was taken that these people should not be pardoned,” Tuah-Yeboah confirmed.

He went on to explain that the letter detailing the president’s considerations was leaked, which led to widespread confusion and false assumptions. Despite the letter being part of the consultation process, some media personnel and the public prematurely concluded that pardons had already been granted.

“The letter that was forwarded to the Council of State was leaked, and instead of most people, including some media personnel, taking time to look at that letter, they decided to come to a conclusion that the President had pardoned some people,” he stated.

Tuah-Yeboah assured the public that the individuals under consideration for pardon remain incarcerated, refuting any claims that they had been released.

“Despite the recent speculations, these individuals remain in prison custody as of now,” he added.
