“No Luxury in Hard” Times”—Shamima Muslim Justifies Scaled-Down Independence Day

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has defended the government’s decision to scale down the 68th Independence Day celebration, insisting that Ghana cannot afford lavish spending during economic hardship.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, March 6, Shamima stressed that the move was a responsible step towards prudent financial management.

“As a nation, we must prioritise the essentials. This year’s scaled-down celebration was necessary to reflect the reality of our economic situation and ensure that limited resources are used wisely,” she stated.

Her comments come amid concerns that the reduced celebration excluded schoolchildren and minimised public participation.

She, however, assured Ghanaians that future commemorations would be more inclusive while remaining cost-effective.

“Going forward, after further review, we will adopt a format that is inclusive and diverse yet still cost-sensitive and patriotic in approach,” she added.

Unlike previous years, this year’s Independence Day was marked with a simple event at the Jubilee House instead of the traditional grand parade at Independence Square.

The government maintains that the adjustment was necessary to align with the country’s economic realities while preserving the essence of the celebration.
