The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has recaptured the Akwatia parliamentary seat after its candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, secured a decisive victory in Tuesday’s by-election.
Certified results declared by the Electoral Commission on September 2, 2025, showed Baidoo polling 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes. The Liberal Progressive Party’s (LPP) Owusu Patrick trailed far behind with just 82 votes, while 303 ballots were rejected.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Ernest Kumi, the late NPP Member of Parliament for Akwatia, earlier this year. The contest quickly became a high-stakes showdown, with both major parties deploying heavy resources, prominent figures, and grassroots mobilization strategies to secure the seat.

Addressing jubilant supporters and journalists after the results were announced, Baidoo expressed profound gratitude to his constituents and attributed the victory to the NDC’s compelling message of renewal and inclusivity.
“Ebenezer, this is how far the good Lord has brought us. The confidence has always been there. It is not just mere confidence out of nothing. It was borne out of the good job we have done. After engaging the people, we read their reactions towards the message we gave them. We saw that it had really imbibed; they gave us hope, which has resulted in what we are seeing today,” he said.
Baidoo also dedicated the win to the grassroots members of the NDC, whom he credited for tirelessly campaigning in communities across the constituency.
The outcome deals a significant blow to the NPP, which had held the seat and considered Akwatia a crucial battleground in the Eastern Region. Political analysts note that the result could signal shifting voter sentiments ahead of the 2028 general elections, with the NDC now emboldened by a renewed presence in the constituency.
Celebrations broke out late into the night in Akwatia as NDC supporters paraded through the streets, chanting songs of victory and pledging continued support for their new MP-elect.
